The columbine flower, scientifically known as Aquilegia, is a perennial herbaceous flower that is a member of the buttercup family, Ranunculaceae. Flowers of the columbine plant typically appear in a spectrum of pastel and vivid hues, including orange, pink, yellow, and blue. The inner petals of many forms of this flower take the form of a delicate bell, and they are shielded from the elements by a set of spurred sepals, which function as the flower's outer petals. Plants of the columbine species are simple to cultivate at home and can thrive in a variety of climatic conditions. They are resistant to drought and deer as well as having the ability to reach heights of up to three feet and widths of up to two feet. Columbine is a flower that is grown for its ornamental value, however it is poisonous to both people and animals.
